Taking data from the Superintendent Salary Report compiled by Oklahoma Watchdog last month and comparing it to the list of 61 school districts on the State Department of Education’s “Needs Improvement” list finds 37 of those superintendents got a compensation increase this year. Those increases range from $40 in Altus to $32,000 in Western Heights.

The first five schools are in their second year on the Needs Improvement list. Only two of the districts in their second year on the list – Lawton and Wetumka – saw their superintendents get compensation increases. Oklahoma City remained the same while Tulsa and Ponca City saw decreases in excess of $20,000. To get on the Needs Improvement list, a district has to have failed to meet its Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals for two years in a row. So those in their second year on the list have failed to meet AYP for three consecutive years.
Overall, 28 of the 61 superintendents got compensation increases of $1,000 or more. 16 of them got $5,000 or more.
